Use wordreference.com to find the meanings of the following common reflexive verbs.

Verbos reflexivos comunes

Español English Español English levantarse to get up ducharse vestirse acostarse lavarse cepillarse bañarse afeitarse sentarse maquillarse .

How to Use Reflexive Verbs in Spanish

Every reflexive infinitive verb has a "se" at the end of the verb. For example, in "levantarse" (to get up), "levantar" is the verb, and "se" shows us it's reflexive.

Change "se" to Match Who You Are Talking About

When you use the verb, you change "se" to match who is doing the action:

  • Yo (I) - me
  • Tú (You, singular informal) - te
  • Él/Ella/Usted (He/She/You, singular formal) - se
  • Nosotros/Nosotras (We) - nos
  • You don't have to use this one, but here's the explanation if you want it: Vosotros/Vosotras (You, plural informal) - os
  • Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes (They/You, plural formal) - se

Conjugate the verb and add the "se" ending

Example: for "levantarse," take "levantar" and change it depending on who is doing the action:
- Yo me levanto
- Tú te levantas
- Él / ella / Ud. se levanta
- Nosotros / nosotras nos levantamos
- Ellos / ellas / Uds. se levantan

(Vosotros/vosotras would be "os levantáis" but we do not us it in this class.)

Ejemplos

The verb despertarse means "to wake up".

There are a couple of things going on here. First, "despertarse" is a reflexive verb, so we need to add that reflexive marker to the front of the verb like we saw above. Next, we need to conjugate the verb AND "despertar" is an e -> ie stem-change verb. That means, instead of "yo me desperto", it should be "yo me despierto."

I wake up at 5:00 AM. = Me despierto a las cinco de la mañana.

Spanish (fill in) English Spanish (fill in) English Yo ..... .......... I wake up Nosotros ..... .......... We wake up Tú ..... .......... You wake up Vosotros os despertáis (I'll give this one to you.) Y'all wake up (informal, Spain and EG.) Él/Ella ..... .......... He/She wakes up Ellos/Ellas ..... .......... They wake up Usted ..... .......... You wake up (sir or ma'am) Ustedes ..... .......... Y'all wake up

Preguntas

How do you write these questions in Spanish?
1) What time do you wake up?
2) Do you wake up late or early?
3) Do you put on makeup? (All you need for this question is the verb "maquillarse".)

"Se" in Spanish

You'll see "se" a lot in Spanish! There are two major ways that its used, and we've seen them in class but we haven't specifically focused on them.

1. Reflexive "Se"

Spanish has reflexive verbs that are like regular verbs in that they end in -ar, -er, and -ir, but then there is "se" attached to the end of the infinitive. You'll hear Spanish teachers call this a "reflexive pronoun" but that's an argument for another day. You can call it a "reflexive pronoun" in your notes.

Reflexive verbs are used when the subject of the sentence performs an action on itself. The "se" in these cases indicates that the action reflects back on the subject.

Examples:
- Lavarse: "Yo me lavo las manos." (I wash my hands)
- Vestirse: "Ella se viste rápidamente." (She gets dressed fast)

I'm going to give y'all a handout with more of these. It needs to live in your notebook/binder.

2. Passive "Se"

There's also a "se" for when actions happen regularly or generally. You've seen signs like this: Aquí se habla español (Spanish is spoken here.)

Example:
- "Se vende" (Like, "it's being sold". You see this when a house is for sale.)

There's also a form called emphatic se and we have something similar in English but normies call it bad grammar.

I'm going to eat a hamburger. > I'm going to eat myself a hamburger (emphatic) > I'm gonna eat me a hamburger.

Assignment: Create a menu from a (soon to be!) famous restaurant

For this assignment, you're going to design a menu for your own restaurant. The restaurant will need to be in the Spanish-speaking world. All the text is in Spanish (apart from proper nouns).

Instructions: # Description 1. Choose a Region or Country Select a Spanish-speaking region or country that interests you. Find typical dishes and drinks from that region and make a list of the ones that you like. Be sure to write down the ingredients because you will include them with the dishes. Be sure the country, city or region is provided somewhere on the menu. Adding the flag or another topical image would be nice as well. 2. Name Your Restaurant Think of a creative name for your restaurant that reflects the regional influence and the type of food you will feature. It can be a play on words, or part of your name plus the region name, etc. 3. Design the Menu Create an attractive layout for your menu. Include the following sections: - Entrantes (Appetizers): List at least three appetizers with descriptions. - Platos principales (Main Dishes): Include at least three main dishes that are popular in your chosen region. - Bebidas (Drinks): Offer a selection of beverages typical to the region. (We're looking for non-alcoholic drinks for this assignment.) - Postres (Desserts): Give at least two traditional desserts. Again, the minimum requirements for items on the menu are tres (3) entrantes, tres (3) platos principales, varias (2+) bebidas típicas, dos (2) postres. 4. Provide the Ingredients Beneath each food / drink, provide the main ingredientes in Spanish. For example, beneath the famous Nicaraguan "nacatamal" you would see the description, "masa de maíz, verduras, arroz y carne de cerdo en una hoja de plátano." 5. Add Prices Set and provide the precios (prices) for each item in the local currency of the region or country you have selected. Research the typical cost of meals to make your pricing realistic. Google and Tripadvisor often have menus of famous restaurants that you can use as examples. 6. Turn it in! Submit a photo of your menu to the assignment on Schoology. You will also turn in the physical copy after you submit the assignment to Schoology. Your Schoology submission is your receipt that the assignment has been submitted. Again, you will submit an image of your physical menu to the assignment on Schoology, then hand in the physical copy.

Assignment Rubric

Criteria Excellent (5 points) Good (3-4 points) Needs Improvement (1-2 points) Unacceptable (0 points) Country or Region and Presentation The menu clearly identifies a Spanish-speaking country or region with authentic dishes and drinks. Includes cultural symbols like the flag or images that enhance the theme. The menu identifies a country or region with some cultural symbols, but they might not enhance the theme as strongly. The country or region is mentioned, but with minimal or no authentic cultural symbols. No country or region is mentioned, or the section is missing. Creative Name of Restaurant The restaurant name is highly creative, culturally relevant, engaging, and related to the type of food or region. The restaurant name is creative and somewhat culturally relevant. The name lacks creativity or cultural relevance. The restaurant name is missing or clearly copied from another source. Menu Design and Layout The menu is attractively designed with a clear, organized layout including all required sections: entrantes, platos principales, bebidas, and postres. All text is in Spanish. The menu is well-designed with most sections clearly presented. Some minor issues in layout or organization. The menu layout is cluttered or incomplete, and may have missing sections. No menu is submitted or the design is clearly plagiarized. Menu Elements and Descriptions The menu exceeds minimum requirements with creative and culturally authentic descriptions for each item listed under entrantes, platos principales, bebidas, and postres. The menu meets minimum requirements but the descriptions are less detailed or lack some creativity. The menu fails to meet the minimum number of items or the descriptions are inadequate. No items or descriptions provided or they are copied from an external source. Ingredients for Each Dish Ingredients are accurately and completely listed in Spanish for each item, enhancing understanding of the dish and its cultural context. Ingredients are listed for each item, but some may not be in Spanish or lack detail. Ingredients for several items are missing, incorrect, or not listed in Spanish. Ingredients are not provided, or it's clear the list is copied from an existing source without modification. Pricing in Local Currency All items on the menu are priced accurately in the local currency, reflecting realistic costs as researched from sources like Google or TripAdvisor. Most items are priced in local currency with mostly realistic costs, but some prices may not be well researched. Many items are missing prices or the currency used is incorrect. Prices are not provided or are clearly unrealistic or copied directly from a source without adaptation. Submission Format The menu is submitted on time both as a high-quality image on Schoology and as a well-prepared physical copy. Update: Only physical copy required The menu is submitted on time on Schoology and as a physical copy, but one of the formats may have minor issues in quality or timeliness. Update: Only physical copy required (-20) The menu is late, or the submission in one of the formats is missing or poor quality. No submission is made or the work is clearly plagiarized, including use of images or text directly copied without credit.

"Platos de Latinoamérica" - Internet Scavenger Hunt

Directions: Use the internet to find out which Latin American dish corresponds to each row of ingredients below. Write the name of the correct food and country, countries or region in the cells provided in the table. I have given you few examples in the chart.

Steps:
1. Research: Use your school laptop to search for recipes by typing key ingredients or phrases from each row. Don't just translate the ingredients list because this will not give you any dishes you make with them. You want to find these foods.
2. Identify the Dish: Compare the ingredients you find online with the ones listed in the table. Identify the dish that matches the list of ingredients provided.
3. Identify the Country (or countries or region): For example, we often think of tamales as Mexican, but they're eaten throughout Central America. They're a little different than their Mexican counterparts. For your answer, you can write "México" for "tamales" or "México y partes de Centroamérica".

Here are the names of the foods to use (the order has been mixed up):
Ceviche, Mote con huesillo, Tamales, Arepas, Nacatamales, Feijoada, Locro, Empanadas, Chapulines, Pupusas

Nombre del plato País o región Common Ingredients Example: Ceviche Perú Pescado, Jugo de limón, Cebolla, Chiles, Cilantro Harina de maíz, Agua, Sal, Mantequilla, Queso Hojas de maíz, Masa de maíz, Carne (cerdo, pollo, res), Salsa o mole, Manteca o aceite vegetal Harina, Carne (res, pollo), Cebollas, Huevos cocidos, Aceitunas Harina de maíz o arroz, Queso (quesillo), Frijoles, Chicharrón de cerdo, Loroco Brasil (We're including the neighbors! Instructions: Complete the missing English examples below. Some portions of some sentences have been completed for you.

English Español Ejemplo English Example to the north of al norte de La casa de mis amigos está al norte de la ciudad. . to the left a la izquierda Gira a la izquierda en el semáforo para llegar al parque. Turn... to the right a la derecha Para ir al restaurante, gira a la derecha en la esquina. To go to the restaurant, turn right at the corner. straight recto Sigue recto por esta calle por dos kilómetros. Continue straight on this street for two kilometers. to the south of al sur de La playa está al sur de la ciudad. . behind detrás de La tienda está detrás del restaurante. .

Note: Affirmative Commands

In Spanish, when you want to give a simple commands (mandatos) to someone you are talking to directly (using "tú"), use the 3rd person singular present tense form of the verb. Here’s how it works:

  • To tell someone to speak: hablar + él = "habla". This is also the affirmative command form. "Speak! = ¡Habla!"

  • The verb tomar (to take) in the 3rd person singular present tense is toma ("ella toma" or "él toma" means "she takes" or "he takes"). So, toma means "take!" as in "Toma la segunda calle a la izquierda" (Take the second street on the left).

  • Girar (to turn) becomes gira ("ella gira" or "él gira"). So, the command "Gira a la derecha" means "Turn right".

  • For seguir (to continue), sigue ("ella sigue" or "él sigue"). The command "Sigue recto" translates to "Go straight".

El presente progresivo

Guía de referencia rápida
Quick reference guide

Instructions for Forming the Present Progressive in Spanish

The present progressive in Spanish is used to describe ongoing actions that are happening at the moment. Here's how to form it:

1. Conjugate estar

First, conjugate the verb estar according to the subject of the sentence:

  • Yo estoy
  • estás
  • Él/Ella/Usted está
  • Nosotros/Nosotras estamos
  • Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes están

2. Form the "-ing" form of the Action Verb

  • For -ar verbs: Replace -ar with -ando.

    • Example: hablar → hablando (talking)
  • For -er and -ir verbs: Replace -er or -ir with -iendo.

    • Example: comer → comiendo (eating)
    • Example: escribir → escribiendo (writing)

Examples:

  • Yo estoy hablando. (I am talking / speaking.)
  • Tú estás comiendo. (You are eating.)
  • Ella está leyendo. (She is reading.) (This one is a little irregular.)

(There are a few more irregular forms. As you can probably guess, they're the same verbs that are irregular or stem-change verbs when we conjugate in the simple present tense.)

Ejemplos español → inglés

Español English (Write the example sentence in English) Estoy hablando con mi amigo. Estás comiendo una manzana. Ella está escribiendo una carta (a letter). Estamos aprendiendo español. Están corriendo por la cancha de fútbol. .

Ejemplos inglés → español

English Español (Write the example sentence in Spanish.) I am watching a movie (una película). She is reading a book. (Look on this paper to find an example with "leer", it is a little irregular) We are cooking in the kitchen. You are swimming in the sea. They are dancing. .

Try a couple of weather sentences:
1) Está lloviendo en Valparaíso, Chile. →
2) Está nevando en Bariloche, Argentina. →

Semana 16 Pronóstico de tiempo (Quiz Grade in PowerSchool)

Before you begin working on this assignment, you need a city or place to do your weather report on. You can choose, but you have to run it by Mr. Wilkins first. If you don't have a preference, we can give you a place.

Assignment Instructions

Use Canva, PowerPoint or paper (markers, crayons, etc.) to create a 5-day weather report about a place from a Spanish-speaking country or area. The amount of detail you want to include is up to you, but your document must at least contain the following items and follow these guidelines:

  • Your presentation must be completely in Spanish
  • Give the name of city (or park, town, area, etc.) and the country
  • Give a brief description of the area (this can be a sentence or two describing the city. Search for some information about the city if you need to. Do not copy/paste sentences from Google translate or a simply from another website. I want to see descriptions of things that we have learned so far! Place your description somewhere at the top of your page so it does not get in the way of the weather information.)
  • A description of the weather (Use both words and images/icons) for each day. More elaborate examples can include the weather for the morning, afternoon, evening, and night, but this is your choice.
  • The days of the week in Spanish (5-day minimum) (A good practice would be to use one column for weather for each day),
  • Possibility of precipitation.
  • Give temperatures in Celsius!
  • Other relevant information (Activities that people are doing, etc.)

Submit your IMAGE file to the assignment titled, “Pronóstico del tiempo” on Schoology.

Here is a student example drawn by hand: https://wilkins.dropmark.com/1369678/32116616

What is missing in the example above?

  • First, the temperatures are listed in Fahrenheit.
  • There is no description of San José on the paper.
  • What else?

See the rubric on Schoology for specific grading information.

Unidad: Mi familia y yo - Integrated Performance Assessment Outline

Scenario:

You have the opportunity to share information about your family with your classmates. You can also dive deeper with two different presentational options.

Interpretive:

  • Read or listen to text(s)/audio examples that describe different speakers' families and their life experiences.
  • Answer comprehension questions thoroughly to demonstrate understanding of the text.
  • Questions will target Novice Mid - High expectations.

Interpersonal Speaking:

  • Have a conversation with a partner about your families.
  • Ask your partner questions that at least include the following topics:
    1. Los miembros de tu familia y las mascotas: Describe who is in your family, including any pets. (Examples: ¿Cuántas personas hay en tu familia? ¿Tienes mascotas?)
    2. Actividades que haces con tu familia: Discuss activities you enjoy with your family, using phrases like "me gusta" and "nos gusta," and include simple verbs. (Example: Me gusta jugar al fútbol con mi hermano. ¿Y a ti, qué te gusta hacer con tu familia? ¿Haces tu cama por la mañana?)
    3. Tus responsabilidades Talk about your responsibilities at home using expressions like "tener que + infinitive verb" (Example: Tengo que hacer mi cama todos los días. ¿Qué responsabilidades tienes en casa?)
  • Ask follow-up questions to gather more details and maintain the flow of the conversation.

Presentational:

  • Choose one of the following options (We may make this a video instead of a presentation in front of the class.)
    1. Famous Family Presentation: Project a picture of a famous real or fictional family and share details about the family members. (Examples: Miguel's family from "Coco", The Simpsons, etc.)
    2. Family Artifact Presentation: Bring or show a picture of an artifact that holds significance to your family (e.g., a family document, a quilt, etc.). Say where the item comes from, whom it belongs to and its importance to your family.

This option may be a little more difficult than the first one. You will certainly have to look up new vocabulary. But I think it's worth doing if you want to try.

If you want to do this option 2, talk to Mr. Wilkins first! Don't bring in anything fragile or dangerous.

Instrucciones para Jorge:

Objetivo: Crear un Diagrama de Venn en Canva para comparar y contrastar tus similitudes y diferencias con un miembro de tu familia. Para crédito extra, compara con dos miembros.

¿Qué es un Diagrama de Venn?

Es una herramienta visual que usa círculos superpuestos para mostrar las similitudes y diferencias entre dos o más elementos. Las áreas donde se superponen los círculos muestran las similitudes, mientras que las secciones no superpuestas resaltan las diferencias.

Pasos a seguir:

  • Diferencias (Partes no superpuestas):
    • Todo lo anterior, pero destacando las diferencias.
  1. Diseño y Estética: Personaliza colores, fuentes y elementos de diseño en Canva.

  2. Revisa y Descarga: Revisa tu diagrama, descárgalo y súbelo a Schoology. (Te puedo ayudar con esto.)

Para crédito extra: Haz lo mismo pero compara con dos miembros de tu familia. La intersección de los tres círculos contendrá lo que todos tienen en común. Busca ejemplos en Google con tres círculos.

An adverb is a word that describes or gives more information about a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. It often tells how, when, or where something is done. For example:
