E-Learning Day

¡Espero que hayan podido disfrutar la nieve!

Today’s agenda is similar to our in-class daily agenda.

1) Campanazo: Duolingo (>7 minutes)

2) Proyecto: If you were in class on Friday, you have the PBL handout and the final draft worksheet.
Here's a link to the instructions and checklist: https://wilkins.dropmark.com/2061480/37313740
Here's a link to the final draft paper (and rubric): https://wilkins.dropmark.com/2061480/37317323

If you do not have those papers, you will need to complete the assignment on notebook paper or printer paper instead.

Either way, this PBL assignment is due in the green basket the day we return to in-person learning.

If you completed the assignment already, if you want to do another "profesor" or "profesora" there will be extra credit. Only a handful of students have already turned this in, so I am not sure where to apply extra points, but it will be worthwhile.

Use today to finish "Pefil de profesor(a)" drawing and the paragraph and keep it safe.

If you recieved an email from Thursday about your calendarios, those are now very overdue.

Perfil de profesor / profesora

Teacher Profile

In Spanish, you can call your teacher profesor/profesora or maestro/maestra. Depending on where you are, you'll hear one word more than another. Sometimes "maestro/maestra" are teachers for younger children.

For this project-based learning assignment, you will
1) Draw a picture of the profesor/profesora. You can select any teacher here at BHS or any teacher that has been important to you. Your drawing doesn't have to be a masterpiece and it can be minimalistic, but it needs to match the written descriptions.
AND
2) write a paragraph of about that teacher.

After drawing a picture of the teacher, the written information you must add is below:

Check here when completed Include these descriptions: ☐ Tiene... Include at least two of these: una barba, un bigote, lentes, el pelo rizado, una camisa (roja, verde, etc.), ☐ Es... Include at least one sentence about stature. (alto/a, bajo/a, de estatura mediana.) ☐ Es... Include at least one sentence about age. (For example, es joven, mayor (older), no es ni joven ni mayor (neither young nor old.) ☐ Su pelo es... Include at least one sentence about their hair. You can use colors and styles together or make two separate sentences. ☐ Sus ojos son... Write at least one eye sentence. Choose one: Sus ojos son azules, cafés, oscuros, etc. ☐ Es... One more "es..." sentence. Use personality descriptions like amable, serio/a, muy trabajador/a, etc.

After giving their name, you should have at least 6 sentences and an illustrated image at the top of your paper.

Note: You can go beyond the rubric by adding

  • likes/dislikes: Le gusta... / No le gustan...
  • More personality or physical traits.

Dear Parents / Guardians and Students,

¡Bienvenidos! I’m excited to work with you this semester at Broome High School as we begin building (or continue building) proficiency in Spanish.

We are a diverse group of students this semester. I'm pretty sure I have students in all grade levels. Some of you are brand new to Spanish, and I see a few familiar names on my rosters that had Spanish as a middle school elective at Clifdale! If you have more experience in Spanish or another language (like speaking Spanish outside the classroom) please let me know tomorrow!

Regardless of background, our goal is to grow toward Novice High proficiency in Spanish. The syllabus explains this in more detail. I've opted to not print a hard copy for each student this semester. I believe uploading it to Schoology and providing the link means you'll always have access to it, we won't need to use a ream of paper for just the syllabus, and everyone can access the links in the document. If you would like a hard copy, please let me know.

Here's the direct link: https://wilkins.dropmark.com/2061480/37224469

We will use wilkins.dropmark.com regularly for weekly outlines, vocabulary, videos, and class resources. Because the Dropmark site is open, students and families can easily check class materials from any device. No student or personal information is ever posted there.

Please bring these materials tomorrow:
- A notebook or binder for notes

- Something to write with

- A charged laptop (and your charger, ¡por favor!)

Email is the best way to contact me: jowilkins@spartanburg3.org.

¡Manos a la obra!

Yo puedo...

Campanazo (Bell ringer)

Today we'll begin with all of our beginning-of-semester housekeeping requirements. Going forward, your bell ringer will be under the "I can" statement(s) for the day.

Rompehielos (Icebreaker)

What Spanish do we already know?

What are cognates?

Cognates are words in two languages that look and sound similar because they come from the same root. In Spanish and English, these words often have the same meaning, like "animal" in English and "animal" in Spanish. They help us learn new languages faster because we already know what they mean.

Spanish nouns el teléfono la familia el problema la música el chocolate la televisión el animal la foto el hotel la medicina el actor la fruta el doctor el color la radio el artista el momento la nación el programa la computadora

What about other Spanish terms that we use in our everyday lives?
