Me llamo Diego y quiero contarles un poco sobre mi familia. Veo a mi mamá todos los días en la casa. Ella trabaja mucho y ayuda a mi papá con muchas cosas. Yo también ayudo a mi hermano menor con la tarea. Después de la escuela, voy a la casa de mi abuela. A veces vamos a la tienda juntos. Me gusta pasar tiempo con ella. 1) Circle every “a” that appears by itself as a word in the text above. Don't circle every instance of the letter "a" - just circle it when it is used as a word on its own.

A la izquierda del estadio, está el gimnasio donde los estudiantes hacen ejercicio y participan en clases de educación física. You may create one uniform for all students, different uniforms for hombres y mujeres, and include additional uniforms like el uniforme de educación física or uniforme deportivo.

You'll be assessed using the rubric at the bottom of this page. The checklist below is a great tool to help guide your work.

Illustration and Writing Checklist

Put a "✓" in the left column when you complete each part.

✓ Descripciones Write at least one sentence describing the shirt (ej: La camisa es blanca.) Write at least one sentence describing pants (ej: Los pantalones son azules.) If you have a skirt, describe it too. (La falda es azul.) • Spelling errors aren't necessarily bad for this assignment, but these were consistent: aburrido as "abburido", names of classes (!!)
• There's no "apostrophe 's'" in Spanish. We show "possession" relationships with "de".
• Examples like, "en la clase, leo, escribo y hablar."

Este año, la vuelta a clases en Nicaragua es más cara que antes.

Para mandar a un niño o niña a la escuela, los padres necesitan comprar varias cosas. • When does a class begin?
• When does a class end?

Presentational Writing

You'll get the exact writing prompt on the day we write in class. (But, you already know it will cover your schedule, classes, teachers, and activities. You can also include school supplies and other interesting information.)

Make sure you can do this!

• Numbers 1–31 (for dates)
• Numbers 0–60 (for telling time)
• Names of your and your classmates' courses

You can make a list if you'd like. It's also OK to use wordreference.com (not an online translator or Google Lense) to look up words, but try to use the vocabulary from the chart above first.

If you want, you can write full sentences. Use "tengo puesto" or "llevo puesto" to say "I am wearing." If the clothing is plural, use "tengo puestos" or "llevo puestos" and you need change "puesto" to match the gender of the article of clothing too. You can even try writing what you're wearing and have with you in your backpack.

Actividad: Práctica lectora

Instructions: Draw on the back of the news article. You can work in pairs. Both names and your block go on the top of the paper.

A) Divide your paper in half with a line down the middle. On the left side, draw the standard Nicaraguan school uniform for boys based on the information in the text. On the right side, draw the standard school uniform for girls. Use markers, crayons, or color pencils because the colors are important. Be sure to draw all of the articles of clothing listed in the article.

B) Underneath the uniforms, draw graphics that show the school supplies mentioned in the article. You have all the information you need in our class handouts and notes.

C) Label each article of clothing and the school supplies mentioned in the article. We may use them to review. ¡Buena suerte!

In Spanish, ser and estar both mean “to be,” but they are used in different ways:

Ser is for things that are permanent or usually don’t change.

Example: Soy alto. (I am tall.)

Estar is for things that are temporary or can change.

Example: Estoy cansado. (I am tired.)

Ejemplos

Ser feliz: Soy feliz.

(I am a happy person.)

Estar feliz: Estoy feliz.

(I am happy in this moment.)

Ser inteligente: Soy inteligente.

(I am smart.)

Estar cansada: Estoy cansada.

(I am tired.)

The verb estar (singular)

The verb estar is irregular, which means it does not follow the regular -ar verb pattern.

Be sure to include the accent marks on estás and está.

The verb ser (singular)

The verb ser is also irregular.

Person Form yo soy tú eres él / ella es

Los verbos "-ar"

• Definition: "Infinitive verb" >> The infinitive form of a verb is the basic form of a verb. In English, infinitives start with “to.” --> To eat, to sing, etc.

Many infinitive verbs in Spanish en in "-ar." These are called "-ar" verbs. You'll also hear them called "AR" verbs or something similar.

• Definition: "-AR verbs" >> * These are Spanish verbs that end in "-ar" in the infinitive form.

Ejemplos:

English Verbo Infinitivo en Español to talk hablar to sing cantar to eat comer to write escribir

To use all verbs, we change the ending to match who is doing the action. These are called conjugations.

Here are some important pronouns to remember:
- Yo means I.
- Tú means you (informal).
- Él/Ella means he/she.

Regular "AR" verbs.

Here's an example of a regular "-AR" verb. We call it regular because there are no changes anywhere in the verb except for the ending.

Verb: Hablar

Persona Forma 1a persona yo hablo 2a persona tú hablas 3a persona él / ella habla
