Los verbos "-ar"

Most infinitive verbs in Spanish en in "-ar." These are called "-ar" verbs. You'll also hear them called "AR" verbs or something similar. An infinitive is the basic form of the verb, like "to walk" and "to jump" in English.

Ejemplos:

English Infinitive Verbo Infinitivo en Español to talk hablar to sing cantar to eat comer to write escribir

To use all verbs, we change the ending to match who is doing the action. These are called conjugations. Review your notes. We saw these changes with the verb "ser" already.

Here are some important words to remember:
- Yo means I.
- means you (informal).
- Él/Ella means he/she.
- Nosotros/Nosotras means we.
- Ellos/Ellas means they.

Regular "AR" verbs.

Here's an example of a regular "-AR" verb. We call it regular because there are no changes anywhere in the verb except for the ending.

Verb: Hablar

Singular Plural 1a persona yo hablo nosotros hablamos 2a personahablas vosotros habláis (We won't use this one but we can leave it in the chart in case you want to reference it in the future. 3a persona él/ella/usted habla ellos/ellas/ustedes hablan (Ustedes is "y'all")

Let's try some examples.

Part A)

Complete these charts like the example above for "Hablar". Remove the "-ar" ending, and add the ending you see in the chart above.

Verb: Cantar (to sing)

Singular Plural 1a persona yo: nosotros / nosotras: 2a persona tú: 3a persona él/ella/usted: ellos/ellas/ustedes:

Part B)

Let's pretend we're in Chorus class. Complete the sentences using the correct form of the verb "cantar."

  1. Ella ............ una canción (a song) en el concierto.
  2. Nosotros ............ juntos (together) en el coro.
  3. Tú ............ una canción en la clase de música.
  4. Ellos ............ muy bien en el concierto.

Interpersonal Practice

For this activity, you will be asking your partner questions in Spanish and writing down both your answers and your partner’s answers in the chart. Follow these steps:

Round 1: Begin with the first chart. Take turns asking each question in Spanish, one at a time. For example, start by asking, “¿Cómo te llamas?” Your partner will answer, and you will write their response in the “Partner’s answer” column. Then, your partner will ask you the same question, and you will write your response in the “Your answer” column.

Round 2: After completing the first chart, move on to the second chart. Repeat the process of asking and answering each question in Spanish, and fill in both columns with the appropriate answers.

Your own questions: In Round 2, you will have space to create two of your own questions in Spanish.

Round 1)

What are conjugations? (Write this definition in your own words in your notes or on the handout.)

Conjugations in Spanish are how verbs change their endings to match the subject (who is doing the action) and the tense (when the action is happening). For example, in English, we say "I am" and "he is"—the verb "to be" changes depending on the subject. In Spanish, the verb "ser" (to be) also changes: "soy" for "I am," "eres" for "you are," and so on. Conjugations show who is doing what and when in a sentence. TL;DR: Conjugations are the changes that happen to verbs based on the subject (the person/thing doing the action) and tense (when something is happening). Each subject has a different verb ending.

English verb "to be"

Singular Plural 1st Person (I) am (We) are 2nd Person (You) are (You) are 3rd Person (He/She/It) is (They) are

Working with conjugations:
1) What are these called: I, you, we, they, etc.?
2) What form of “to be” follows the pronoun “they”?
3) Is “he” a first, second, or third person pronoun?
4) Which pronoun would you use with the verb “am”?
5) What is the plural form of “I” - that is, "I" + another person?
6) What verb form corresponds to the pronoun “you” in the singular?

English & Spanish pronouns

Singular Plural 1st Person I = yo we = nosotros / nosotras 2nd Person you = tú (you all / y'all = vosotros / vosotras; we won't use this one in class) 3rd Person he/she = él/ella they = ellos (m) / ellas (f)

The Spanish verb "to be" (one of them) is "Ser"

Singular Plural 1st Person (yo) soy (nosotros / -as) somos 2nd Person (tú) eres (vosotros / as) sois {we won't use this one in class.} 3rd Person (él/ella) es (ellos) son

Examples:
1) He is tall.
2) She is young.
3) The houses are red.

"Gustar" in Spanish

In Spanish, the verb "gustar" is used to give likes and dislikes. In English, we say "I like something." For example, "I like Frosted Flakes." In Spanish, the structure is more like "something is pleasing to me" or "something is nice for me." "Frosted Flakes are nice for me." --> "Los Frosted Flakes me gustan."

Singular: "Me gusta"

  • "Me gusta" is used to say you like something.
  • Example: Me gusta el chocolate. (I like chocolate.)

Plural: "Me gustan"

  • "Me gustan" is used when you like more than one thing.
  • Example: Me gustan los libros. (I like books.)

Asking About Likes

When you want to ask someone if they like something, use "te gusta" for singular items and "te gustan" for plural items.

Singular: "Te gusta"

  • Example: ¿Te gusta la música? (Do you like music?)

Plural: "Te gustan"

  • Example: ¿Te gustan los deportes? (Do you like sports?)

What Spanish do we already know?

What are cognates?

Cognates are words in two languages that look and sound similar because they come from the same root. In Spanish and English, these words often have the same meaning, like "animal" in English and "animal" in Spanish. They help us learn new languages faster because we already know what they mean.

Spanish nouns el teléfono la familia el problema la música el chocolate la televisión el animal la foto el hotel la medicina el actor la fruta el doctor el color la radio el artista el momento la nación el programa la computadora

What about other Spanish terms that we use in our everyday lives?
