What are conjugations? (Write this definition in your own words in your notes or on the handout.)
Conjugations in Spanish are how verbs change their endings to match the subject (who is doing the action) and the tense (when the action is happening). For example, in English, we say "I am" and "he is"—the verb "to be" changes depending on the subject. In Spanish, the verb "ser" (to be) also changes: "soy" for "I am," "eres" for "you are," and so on. Conjugations show who is doing what and when in a sentence. TL;DR: Conjugations are the changes that happen to verbs based on the subject (the person/thing doing the action) and tense (when something is happening). Each subject has a different verb ending.
English verb "to be"
Singular | Plural | |
---|---|---|
1st Person | (I) am | (We) are |
2nd Person | (You) are | (You) are |
3rd Person | (He/She/It) is | (They) are |
Working with conjugations:
1) What are these called: I, you, we, they, etc.?
2) What form of “to be” follows the pronoun “they”?
3) Is “he” a first, second, or third person pronoun?
4) Which pronoun would you use with the verb “am”?
5) What is the plural form of “I” - that is, "I" + another person?
6) What verb form corresponds to the pronoun “you” in the singular?
